Ocean

Ocean sounds

Every wave is new, so the sea never loops.

The sea, made wave by wave in this tab: a swell rises, breaks into foam and drains back, over a distant surf that never stops. Nothing is recorded, so there is no loop. Set how rough the sea is, or put quiet music under it.

What you hear

A wave arrives every 6 to 14 seconds. Each one starts as a low swell, grows, breaks into a hiss of foam and drains away while the next one is already on its way. Under the waves there is a soft surf from farther along the shore that never quite stops, and a low rumble of the water itself. Waves land a little to the left or a little to the right, so the sea fills the stereo field the way a real shoreline does.

Generated, not a recording

Most ocean sounds online are recordings: an hour of one beach, or a ten-hour video built from a few minutes on repeat. Sooner or later the same big wave comes back. Here every wave is synthesised as it plays, with its own size, timing, brightness and place, so the pattern never comes round again, however long it runs.

The controls

  • Sea: how loud the sea is.
  • Intensity: from a calm sea with slow, small waves to a rough one with bigger waves that come more often.
  • Tone: a filter from muffled and far away to bright and close.
  • With music: slow chords from Neverloop's Deep Work under the waves, composed live as well.

What people use it for

People put ocean sounds on to cover the room while they work or read, to rest, or at night. That is what they tell us, not a promise: try it, and keep it if it suits you.

Other sounds

Prefer a steady sound with no rhythm at all? Try rain, brown noise or green noise, which sounds like a waterfall. For birds and wind, there is the forest.

Questions

Is this a recording of the sea?
No. The waves are generated in your browser as they play, which is why they never repeat. Nothing is downloaded after the first load of about 250 KB.
Can I fall asleep to it?
Many people use ocean sounds at night. The page plays for 30 minutes at a time, then fades out; press Play to go on. The Neverloop app for iPhone, Android and Mac plays it without a break.
Why does it stop after 30 minutes?
The web player gives the sea 30 minutes at a time. The app plays it without a break, in the background and with the screen locked.

Neverloop for iPhone, Android and Mac

The same music in an app: plays in the background and with the screen locked, works offline, and adds Lo-fi Desk without a break, focus cycles you build yourself, a breathing mode with a pacer, and saved variations.
