Noise is sound with energy spread across all pitches. White noise spreads it evenly, which sounds bright and hissy. Pink noise tilts it towards the low end. Brown noise tilts it further, so most of the energy sits in the lows: it sounds like a steady rumble, closer to a waterfall or the inside of a plane than to radio static.
Many people who find white noise harsh like brown noise for exactly that reason: it covers background sound without the hiss.
Why generated noise
Most brown noise online is a recording, often an hour long or a loop of a few minutes. With a short loop, some people start to notice the seam. Here the noise is computed as it plays, so there is no seam to find.

- Colour: brown, deep brown (with the highs rolled off further), pink or white.
- Tone: a filter from dark and muffled to fully open.
