What people ask for
When people with ADHD describe the background sound they like to work to, the same wishes keep coming up: no lyrics, nothing that jumps out, a steady texture, often brown noise, and no loop that becomes obvious after ten minutes. This page is built around that list. It is music and noise, nothing more, and we make no promises about what it does for you: try it, and keep it if it suits you.
What you hear
- No words: slow chords on warm pads and electric piano, a soft bell now and then, no vocals and no beat.
- No sudden changes: every change waits for the next bar and fades in, and the volume never jumps.
- Deep brown noise underneath: brown noise with the highs rolled off further, a low, even rumble that covers voices and clatter around you. Switch to brown, pink or white, or darken it with Tone.
- Never the same loop: the music is composed bar by bar while it plays and the noise is generated as it plays, so there is no seam to start noticing.
Brown noise
Brown noise is one of the sounds people with ADHD search for most, and many say a low, steady rumble helps them settle into a task. That is what they report, not a finding of ours. If you want the noise on its own, the brown noise page plays it without music.
Short timers
Long focus blocks do not suit everyone. Pick 10 or 15 minutes and the music plays until the time is up, then winds down and settles on its last chord instead of ringing an alarm. 15 + 5 × 4 gives four short rounds with a five-minute break between them. For longer rounds, the pomodoro timer has 25/5 and 50/10.
When it starts to feel familiar
Press New variation and a different piece begins at the next bar, in another key and at another tempo, without a gap.
Questions
- Is this music made for ADHD?
- It is made to match what many people with ADHD ask for in background sound: no lyrics, no sudden changes, a steady texture. It is not a medical product, and we make no claims about what it does for ADHD.
- Why deep brown noise and not white noise?
- White noise is bright and hissy. Brown noise keeps most of its energy in the lows and sounds like a soft rumble, and deep brown rolls off the highs further still. Many people find it easier to leave on for a long time. The colour buttons switch between them.
- Does it cost anything?
- No. The player on this site is free, with no sign-up and no ads.
