What you hear
Wind moves through the leaves, rising in gusts that make them rustle and settling again. Six birds live in this forest, each with its own song: one whistles a few gliding notes, one runs a fast trill, one calls two pure notes, high then lower, one twitters, and one coos softly from far away. Each sings from its own place, left or right, near or far, and repeats its song with small changes, as real birds do. Every few minutes one bird leaves and another moves in, and rarely a woodpecker drums somewhere in the distance.
Generated, not a recording
A forest recording is one morning in one wood, and on a loop the same blackbird sings the same phrase every few minutes. Here the wind and every song are synthesised as they play, so the forest keeps changing and never comes back to the same moment.
The controls
- Forest: the wind, from still air with only a few leaves rustling to strong gusts that come often. The birds stay the same; all the way left turns the forest off.
- Birds: from sparse, a song every ten seconds or so, to lively, with one or two a second.
- Tone: a filter from soft and far to bright and close.
- With music: slow chords from Neverloop's Deep Work under the forest, composed live as well.
What people use it for
People play forest sounds as a quiet background for work, reading or rest, often in a room with no window onto anything green. That is what they tell us, not a promise: try it, and keep it if it suits you.
Other sounds
For waves, try the ocean. For a steady sound with no birds at all: rain, brown noise or green noise.
Questions
- Are these real birds?
- They are synthesised birds, made in your browser as they sing, with songs shaped after thrushes, wrens, warblers and doves. They are not recordings of a particular species.
- Does it ever repeat?
- No. Each bird repeats its own song with small changes, as birds do, but the forest as a whole never comes back to the same moment, and the birds change over time.
- Why does it stop after 30 minutes?
- The web player gives the forest 30 minutes at a time; press Play to go on. The Neverloop app for iPhone, Android and Mac plays it without a break, in the background and with the screen locked.
